Visions of the Cosmos

A visual exploration of the universe and an introduction to astronomy.

Visions of the Cosmos was a natural outgrowth of the Hubble Vision books that Jack Brandt and I wrote following the Hubble Space Telescope's deployment. We wanted to use HST and other space-based images to teach more about astronomy in a largely un-textbook-like setting. This book was the result. It features large, lovely images and what we hope are compelling and clear explanations of the rudiments of astronomy.

It begins with a look at the machines we use to look at the sky, and then explores, in very broad terms, the objects that astronomers study and the way they use various wavelengths of light to understand the cosmos. It ends with a look at new-generation scopes, and remains reasonably well up-to-date. A worthwhile addition to an astronomer's bookshelf or e-reader.
