On March 25, 2001, the crew and passengers of the MS Ryndam rounded Cape Horn, latitude of 57 degrees South, at 1500 hours, at a distance of 25 nautical miles. The air temperature was a balmy 47 degrees F (7 degrees Celsius). The seas were heavy and we were sailing into strong winds. At 5 p.m., the captain executed a 180-degree turn and headed back east around Cape Horn at a distance of 6 nautical miles. We celebrated on deck by taking pictures. Some hardy passengers celebrated by becoming members of the Penguins Club in the aft pool, being doused by cold seawater during the passage. That evening the ship headed northeast for Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego.
