January's Winter Wonderland

The first week of 2003 saw lots of snow here at Casa Petersen! We got back from Christmas break in Arizona only to find about a foot of snow on the ground from a Christmas Day blizzard. On the first days of 2003 we had an ice storm, and then Friday January 3 it started up again, and now we have about 2 feet (about 60 cm) piled up around the house! Welcome to our winter wonderland!

Ice-encased trees

Ice-encased trees
A late-afternoon freezing rainstorm covered all our trees with a thin layer of ice. The next day's sunlight glinted off the forest, making everything shimmer. Carolyn just happened to glance out the window of her office and notice the scene — and ran outside to capture a few shots for posterity.

Later that night it began to snow. Around midnight Carolyn stepped out for some snow photography and caught some big ol' flakes in the act.

Digging out!

Digging out the porch
Come Saturday morning we were greeted with about 30 cm of snow (a foot or so). We knew we had to dig out sometime, so we hauled out the shovels and got to work! Here's the side porch after some determined snow mining!

Then it was time to dig out the cars and the 40 feet of driveway between us and the road. Luckily our neighbors from across the road came over and plowed out the drive for us.

Well, after all our hard work on Saturday morning, it began snowing again that afternoon, but ultimately it only plopped another little bit down on the ground.

Come Sunday morning we brushed off the latest snowfall and took some "Christmas-card" style photos of the house.

Carolyn had a chance to frolic in the snow, too!
