Carolyn and Mark's German Eclipse Adventure
Embarkation

Even before we got married, we have enjoyed travelling together. Our honeymoon was spent in Washington, D.C. at a planetarium conference (no, we're not nuts, although it might look that way). Over the years, we've traveled to more than 100 planetarium and astronomy conferences across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

Well, 21 years to the day we were married, we found ourselves on yet another jaunt -- this time only partly to do with planetaria. On August 5, we clambered onboard a United Airlines 777 on its way to Munich. The occasion? To see the total solar eclipse, of course! It swept across northern Europe through eastern Europe, Turkey, the Black Sea, Iran, Iraq, and India on August 11, 1999.

Oh, there was business to do -- Carolyn had to present a paper at a symposium on amateur-professional cooperation in astronomy, at the European Southern Observatory headquarters in Garching bei München.

Mark, having been assured of viewing a total solar eclipse from a biergarten (bier in hand), decided to spend time doing a planetarium tour of Bavaria with long-time friend and business associate Volker Röhrs.
